Carlow College, St. Patrick's invites you to a public lecture by Lecturer in Psychology, Dr Sean Boyle, exploring the positive and negative effects of self-belief on human performance.
Fear often stops us from experiencing new things. As a behavioural scientist within the field of human fear research, I have witnessed hundreds of research volunteers take what they perceived to be the safe option rather than risk any possible negative consequences. In reality, there was no negative consequence within the experiment, but they never discovered that!
In his book “How confidence works”, Professor Ian Robertson proposed that anxiety simply ‘stops you from doing new stuff’. Within the book he highlighted a number of interesting psychological studies which examined the positive and negative effects of self-belief on human performance.
Combining my own research with these studies, this public lecture will demonstrate how anxiety inhibits individual levels of performance, and how confidence is likely to promote it. The talk will also examine the underlying behaviours which can promote self-confidence and individual self-belief. Finally, it will argue that self-belief can be learned by using simple techniques and strategies.
