An evening talk by Dr Karen Dempsey 'Castle gardens: thinking green in the medieval world'
As part of Heritage Week 2021, Join Carlow Historical & Archaeological Society for an evening talk ‘Castle Gardens: thinking green in the medieval world’. Dr Karen Dempsey (NUI Galway) will speak about the importance of gardening to medieval society, the roles of gardens at castles and how it may be possible to creatively research the plants that once grew there. This talk has a broad focus on gardens and castles across the Norman world but with a micro-focus on how we could further our knowledge of castles gardens in Carlow. Can a botanical re-examination of the castle landscapes of Ballyloughan, Ballymoon, Clonmore and others such as Castlemore and Rathvilly reveal fresh evidence of medieval green lives?
