For County Carlow, the Big Beach Clean Up means a volunteer litter pick along the riverbanks. People you don’t need to live anywhere near the coast to get involved. Statistics reveal that litter dropped in towns and cities is the primary cause of marine litter. So, no matter where people reside in Ireland, they can help prevent litter from entering our precious waterways, tackling it at source.
The Big Beach Clean is part of the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC), a global initiative operated by Ocean Conservancy. This event not only encourages the removal of litter from Irish beaches but also provides an opportunity to contribute to a vital citizen science project. By collecting data on the amount and types of litter found, we can raise awareness about the issue of marine litter and advocate for impactful policies and campaigns.
If people wish to hold a clean-up in their area (exact same as the way the National Spring Clean works) they can register here to receive a FREE clean-up kit from Clean Coasts and their friends at Kia Ireland: https://cleancoasts.org/our-initiatives/big-beach-clean/
